E-Commerce Guides: Conversion, Platforms and Checkout

E-commerce rewards the unglamorous details. This section covers product pages, checkout, platform choice and the trust signals that decide whether a visitor with a card in hand completes the order.

We look at the total cost of ownership and the effect on a real checkout, not just a feature list. A platform that saves on fees but loses sales at payment is not cheaper.

Fix the leak before buying traffic

Most stores do not have a traffic problem. They have a leak problem: shipping cost that appears late, a discount code that fails, a page that takes four seconds to load, a returns policy nobody can find.

Fixing those leaks is cheaper than buying more clicks. We rank the changes by effort and impact and insist on measuring one change at a time, because five changes at once teach you nothing.

Checkout is where intent is highest

Show the total cost, including shipping and tax, before the customer enters payment details. Offer the payment methods people actually use in your market, and let guests check out without creating an account.

Every required field that is not strictly necessary is a small tax on completion. Test the whole flow on a mid-range phone over a slow connection, not just on a desktop in the office.

Platform choice is an exit decision

The platform decision is about fees, migration and control. Model the total cost at next year's volume, including payment processing, apps, themes and the developer time to make it work.

Ask for a sample export and try importing it into a test store. If the export loses variants, reviews or order history, that is a cost you will pay later, in money or in lost data.

Where to start

Begin with the conversion fixes if you already have traffic, then read the platform guide before you replatform. Fixing the checkout is usually cheaper than migrating.

Keep a simple log of date, change and result. A store that learns one thing a week compounds faster than one that redesigns every quarter.
