Software Development Guides: Teams, Code and Delivery

Software development is a delivery problem as much as a technical one. This section covers the habits that help small teams ship useful changes without accumulating a codebase nobody wants to touch.

Every guide explains the trade-off, the cost of getting it wrong and the smallest change that improves the team's week. We assume a handful of people, not a platform organisation with a release department.

How we judge development advice

We look for a measurable effect on cycle time, defect rate or maintenance cost. Advice that only works with a large platform team is labelled as such, because most readers are shipping with a handful of people.

We also test the boring parts: setup time, review queues, deploy frequency and the number of places where work can wait. A process that looks elegant on a slide but adds a weekly meeting is marked down.

Small teams, short loops

The teams that ship are rarely the ones writing the most code. They are the ones with the shortest distance between an idea and a real user. That distance includes scoping, review, testing, deployment and the wait for a decision.

Our guides focus on removing that waiting: smaller changes, faster checks, a releasable main branch and tooling that earns its place by deleting a step rather than adding a dashboard.

Code review as a quality habit

A review can catch a defect, spread context or waste an afternoon. The difference is usually the size of the change and the clarity of the request. We cover how to prepare a pull request, what to comment on and how to keep the queue moving.

Feedback should address the code, not the person. We prefer comments that explain the risk, separate blocking issues from suggestions and leave formatting to an automated tool.

Where to start

Begin with the small-team delivery guide for the big picture, then read the code review piece before your next sprint. Both assume you want fewer meetings and smaller surprises.

For the infrastructure side, our cloud guides cover the bill and the migration checklist that keeps a move from becoming a midnight incident.
